In a climate of rising costs and tighter budgets, health care units are in the continual process of adapting, innovating and reinventing themselves. Health care organizations are looking for employees who are knowledgeable of policy and quality of service directives and, at the same time, have the skills to manage people, resources, innovation and costs. The comprehensive curriculum provided by this program allows students to learn essential aspects of managing a health care unit, including accounting, statistics, analytics, organizational behaviour and more, all within a culturally respectful environment.

This program is for domestic or international students who have an undergraduate degree, and wish to pursue supervisory careers in the field of health care. Or, for those students wishing to gain a foundational knowledge of management prior to pursuing a Master’s degree.

Why study at CBU?

To ensure this program meets Nova Scotia and Canada’s current health care climate and system needs, CBU’s Post-Baccalaureate Diploma in Health Care Management was developed in consultation with more than 10 individuals
and organizations within the health care and business sector of Nova Scotia. Consultations included representatives from the Nova Scotia Health Authority, Membertou First Nations, local Chamber of Commerce and more.

As a student studying in this program, your classes will take place in the centre of Sydney’s downtown core at our off-campus Cineplex classroom location. Along with gaining the skills necessary to lead in Canada’s health care system, you’ll receivedirect mentoring from professors with expertise in health care and business sectors. Your professors, along with Career Services staff, will help students secure and succeed in internships and capstone projects.

As a university with students from more than 50 countries, CBU proudly offers the chance for students to work and learn within diverse groups and teams. Carefully designed case studies, projects, presentations and peer critiques foster this diverse environment and the chance to learn from not only sector professionals, but peers as well.

What skills will I gain from this program?

  • Understand the effect of external environments (political, legal, market, sector) on the management of health care organizations
  • Use data analytics tools and techniques to make strategic decisions, support operational goals and maximize resources
  • Understand and respect the diverse beliefs, values and health care needs of the community, including Indigenous health care priorities, barriers and needs
  • Ability to integrate technical knowledge of management, incorporating theoretical and ethical concepts in managing people, operations and finances

Possible Career Paths

Upon graduation with a Health Care Management Diploma, students can pursue employment and gain practical experience in a variety of organizations in the health sector, such as hospitals, nursing homes, medical clinics and medical practices.

Experiential Learning Opportunities

  • Choice of completing a 12-week internship placement within an organization
  • Or, completing a capstone project where students are supervised and closely mentored by their professors, having the opportunity to apply skills to a business project.

  • Completed a Bachelor’s degree at an accredited university
  • Obtained an overall undergraduate average of 70% Canadian equivalent or higher
